Can a Less-Than-Great Photo be Used?
For a recent title, the Virtus creative design team was faced with a dilemma. The author really wanted to use a photo that was significant with regard to the content of his book, but severely lacking in terms of quality (shown on the top left). It pictured his beloved dog, Spanky.
The original photo was a somewhat tattered Polaroid taken during the Vietnam War. It had obvious signs of damage from being stashed in a drawer somewhere.
The author also hoped to somehow include an image of the type of helicopter mentioned in the book, although not as the primary image.
The team agreed that satisfying both of these requests would be a challenge, but worth a shot.
After applying professional-level Adobe Photoshop skills, the team provided a few versions created in Adobe InDesign from which to choose. The final cover image incorporated both a cleaned-up Spanky and the helicopter, subtly placed behind the title.
The author was thrilled, particularly that Spanky made it to the final cover!
So while sourcing a high-quality image for a cover is always the best choice, with the right skillset, the right team can make it happen.
At Virtus, we make the author’s priorities our priorities.
